How does nutrition counselling work?

Step 1

Book

You can book a free 15 minute discovery call to see if we’re a good fit, or you can book an initial nutrition assessment online.  I work with clients Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

Step 2

Prepare

Once your initial nutrition assessment is booked, you’ll receive 3 emails: 1) invitation to sign up for the Practice Better client portal,  2) your appointment details,  3) forms you complete before our first appointment.

Step 3

Take action

During the 60-minute virtual initial nutrition assessment, we’ll discuss your health goals, general health, digestive symptoms, bowel habits, diet, and lifestyle.  We’ll devise a care plan for you to work on until our follow up appointment.  I’ll provide education and resources to help you implement your care plan.

Step 4

tweak & maintain

During the 45-minute follow up appointments, we’ll review your progress, troubleshoot your barriers, and adjust your care plan as needed.  I’ll continue to provide education, resources and counselling to keep you on track.

Frequently Asked Questions

(Click the question to open the accordion and get the answer).

Q: Do I need my doctor to diagnose me with IBS before I meet with you?

A: Ideally yes, but it’s not absolutely necessary.  Many digestive disorders share overlapping symptoms so it’s important for your doctor to assesses your condition.   Each digestive disorder has its own interventions, so an accurate diagnosis of IBS is essential before implementing interventions.  IBS interventions likely won’t yield desired results if you do not in fact have IBS.

I provide a receipt for your appointment that you can submit to your provider.  I do not do direct billing.  Many insurance companies offer coverage for registered dietitians (including Canada Life) so check with your provider.

A: This depends on the complexity of your gut issues, the interventions we choose, whether you implement those interventions consistently, and how quickly your body responds.  Expect a minimum of 3 appointments, the first of which being the initial nutrition assessment.

Follow up appointments are usually spaced 2-6 weeks apart depending on the client’s needs, schedule, and care plan.

A: Yes.  I use a client portal called Practice Better to work with my clients. The portal can be accessed via computer, tablet, or phone using the Practice Better app (available on Apple and Android).   There is an introductory video in the client portal on how to navigate it.   Within the client portal you’re able to join our video appointments, pay your invoice, reschedule appointments, upload your bloodwork, access resources I provide and review your care plan details.

A: No.  There are numerous dietary and lifestyle interventions for IBS, with the low FODMAP diet being one approach.  A client’s interventions are based on the nutrition assessment and the needs and goals of the client.

You can email me or send me a text in the client portal between appointments and I’ll respond as soon as I can (within 48 hours).
